Using Twitter Analytics To Improve Your Engagement

How much planning do you put into your social media marketing? For many businesses, unfortunately, a haphazard approach is all that resources and time will allow. That’s often because companies may not realize what the data is that can help them use social media more effectively.

Of course, before you even measure and analyze metrics, you have to figure out how Twitter fits in to your overall company marketing strategy. Do you care if you have more followers, or do you want the people already connected with you to become more active? All those goal-oriented questions are important to consider first.

Let’s back up a bit and take a look at some Twitter stats according to Hootsuite:

There’s a saying that goes, “you can’t manage what you don’t measure.” This is also true with social media marketing. To use Twitter effectively, you must be familiar with your metrics. The Twitter Analytics Dashboard is accessible for all users to use from their desktops at analytics.twitter.com.

Use These Instagram Tips To Grow Your Audience

The key to success with Instagram is knowing your audience and giving the people what they want. I’ve put together a list of Instagram tips and important stats to help you shine on Instagram!  Whatever your business might be, whether you have a product or service, these tips can help to maximize your success.

There are three key areas to focus with Instagram marketing: Increasing your followers, increasing your engagement and understanding Instagram users.

GROW YOUR FOLLOWERS

Connect Your Instagram Account With Facebook

Here’s what I know. It’s a lot easier to get people to follow you who already know you than those who don’t. Build your network with who you know. This is why I didn’t dive into Periscope when Facebook Live became a thing. I’ve already built an audience on Facebook that I can broadcast to. Now, if I ever want to try to reach a brand new audience? I can always go to Periscope.

You Must Have A Hashtag Strategy

Some Instagram tips are non-negotiable. Like this one. If you hate using hashtags, you better learn to love them if you want to build your Instagram following. It’s part of the culture. It’s how to find things and how to be found. If you don’t know what to use, a simple google search will do. Don’t over do it. You can use up to 30, but that’s probably not necessary. What is necessary, is using hashtags that are relevant to your post.

If you want to use a dozen hashtags but you think it looks too spammy, simply post your photo or video with a caption, and then use the first comment to add your hashtags. It just looks neater.

Be Consistent

This is a social media golden rule. Simply decide on how often you’re going to post and stick to it. You don’t have to post several times a day or even every day. But you do need to be consistent.

Don’t Just Lead, Follow!

If you want followers, you have to follow others too. Don’t but one of those people who wants to do all the broadcasting. You don’t have to follow everyone, but how will you get to know people if you don’t follow them?

ENGAGE

Post High-Quality Photos

Instagram marketing is visual marketing. Visual marketing has to look good. REALLY good. The better it looks the more you stand out. Most smart phone cameras can do the trick. Just be sure to use good spacing and lighting. Always choose your best photos.

Make Your Photos Stand Out

Make your photos POP with image-editing apps. There are many apps that help take your photos from good to GREAT. Here are some of my favorites.

Sharing Is Caring

If you want friends, you have to be a friend. Treat others like you would want to be treated. Cliché? Well, cliché’ or not, these things apply. Liking, commenting and sharing go a long way.

Search Hashtags

Some Instagram tips are often overlooked. This is one of them. Searching hashtags is how you discover new friends and followers. Search hashtags and genuinely engage. Sometimes I like to search hashtags of apps that I use for photo editing. I love searching high quality photos and sharing my own.

If you want to be successful on Instagram, you need to understand your audience. Understanding your audience means understanding who they are.

Social Media Marketing: What To Do, What Not To Do

Social Media Marketing is not so new anymore. It’s no longer a consideration but an integral part of one’s overall marketing strategy. Even with that being the case, it’s still new to many people. It’s new for those who are just starting a business or career, and it’s new for those who are late to the game.

Recently I had the honor of presenting on social media marketing at ICLE’s Probate & Estate Planning Institute with Terrence Quinn, Estate Planning Attorney. Terrence was presenting, “Marketing Matters” which discussed how to market your law practice. He brought me along to discuss social media. I thought it would be fun to discuss the Do’s and Don’ts.

Whether you’re late to the game or just new to business, you need to know a few rules. What better way to illustrate some of the most important rules than with a few “do’s and don’ts?” Here are 5 that I outlined at the presentation that I feel are key for starting off right and positioning yourself for many wins.

5. DO SHOWCASE YOUR EXPERTISE

The content you share should help make your audience a more informed consumer.Click To Tweet Your content should be valuable and relevant. Offer tips, industry news and recommendations. Social media marketing can help to brand you as an expert in your field, and a thought leader. Take for example, my client, Attorney Terrence Quinn. When  Michigan’s Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets Act was announced, Terrence immediately wrote an article explaining what it meant and what you need to do. This is how you join in on a conversation that is relevant to your audience and establish yourself as an expert.

4. DON’T DO ALL THE TALKING

My friend Brooke Ballard of B Squared Media always says, “Think Conversation.” Not only should you be sharing relevant content but you should be having conversations. Take the time to comment on posts, reply, retweet, ask questions and share. Be present even if it’s just a short time but be consistent. Conversations build relationships. Relationships lead to business.

3. DO NETWORK LIKE YOU WOULD OFFLINE

Or, like you SHOULD offline. When you’re at networking events you’re looking to make connections. You don’t just walk up to people and start talking about yourself and your business. That is so not social. Think about how you feel at networking events and what you do or don’t like when you’re networking.

2. DON’T THINK OF IT AS A SALES OPPORTUNITY

Some professionals, like lawyers, are restricted from soliciting business under the Rules of Professional Conduct. GREAT! That’s doing it wrong anyway. People like a soft sell on social media. They like to do business with people they like and trust. This is achieved by developing relationships. Gain their confidence by providing value. Most people are tuned into WIIFM – What’s In It For Me? Focus on making your audience more informed and having conversations.

1. DO YOUR RESEARCH

Know your target market and where they are hanging out online. By all means, don’t try to wing it. You need a plan. Plan where, and plan how by doing your research. You could simply survey your customers or clients as one way of learning more about your target market and what their habits are.

On the flip side of research, do know that your audience is doing their research. It’s called Google. When they search, are they finding you or are they finding your competition? If they’re finding you what are they finding?

Keep these important rules in mind when beginning your social media marketing journey. Set yourself up for success.

Why Automated Direct Messages Are So Not Social

I don’t like automated direct messages. I do not like them in a box, I do not like them with a fox. To me, they are along the same lines of publishing posts from FB to Twitter. It’s just so not social. I have to guess that it works for somebody out there. I just don’t see how. There are few things on social media more annoying to me than receiving an automated direct message from someone I just met trying to pitch me on something, or get me to do something. We just met! There’s a courting phase that has to happen before we get personal enough for direct messages, right? Besides, this is an automated message. You say this to everyone.

Here’s an example, I recently followed someone back who is also in digital marketing. Great. I like connecting with others in my field. I’m always interested in seeing content from a new source that I can perhaps share with my audience or just having someone to connect with that share the same professional interests. Then, I get a direct message from this person asking me if I am interested in social media marketing strategy services. What?? That’s what I do! I have to conclude that you did not even bother to read my profile, my tweets and probably send this message out to everyone regardless. That is so not social. The whole point of social media is getting to know someone. You didn’t even bother to do research on me before approaching me. Here’s another message I found odd, “great tweets, can we find 5 minutes to connect?” Nope. We can’t. I already feel like you’re pitching me. We just connected. It’s already weird.

I also find that some of these offenders, don’t do much engaging on Twitter. They’re simply broadcasting and firehosing. If I go to a profile and click tweets & replies, I’m hoping to at least see you thanking someone for a share, a retweet or chatting in a tweetchat with others at some point. Where is the conversation?

Automated direct messages come off as impersonal and self serving. With Twitter, and social media in general, you should show some interest first, genuine interest, in people that you are connecting with. Check out their tweets. Retweet what you find is valuable. Look at a person’s bio and see if you have something in common that you could start a conversation about. Visit their website, or blog, and share their content. Be a friend to make a friend. In all the automated direct messages I’ve received recently, I am very happy that it’s been a few years since I’ve gotten the direct message saying, “let’s take this beyond 140 characters” with a link to their Facebook page. Ugh. Gross.

I’m not saying direct messages are not okay. I am referring to the generic automated direct messages sent to the masses.

How To Be Engaging Online

Your online presence is important for many reasons. Let’s face it, you’re trying to grow your business. You want people to know who you are and what you do. You want to be seen. Sure, you can use social advertising to be seen.

We all want our content to stand out. So we work hard to make it interesting, shareable and valuable. But your content isn’t always seen unfortunately due to busy newsfeeds, tricky algorithms and timing, right? So. What else works? Simply being engaging!

I’m not just talking about when people comment, like and share YOUR content. I’m talking more about BEING engaging, starting conversations, and showing genuine interest in others. What are some great ways you can be engaging?

  • Engaging with followers. Start a conversation. If they share their recent blog post, retweet it adding your own comment.
  • Make a twitter list of companies or people you want to network with or do business with and make a point to start engaging with them. Having a list helps you target them specifically.
  • Make new connections with people you want to network with and take a genuine interest in what they share Comment on and share their content. Comment on their blogs posts.
  • Ask questions! Questions are conversation starters. Conversations lead to relationships which can ultimately lead to business.
  • Tag users in posts that are relevant to them. If you notice an article, a graphic with a statistic or fact that you think they could speak to, tag them and ask for their thoughts or just let them know you thought they’d be interested in hear about it.
  • Be human. Your audience wants to engage with the person behind the logo. So make it personal. Share your likes and interests beyond your business. Share your hobby. You can make a connection with your audience on things you have in common or just by showing a bit of yourself outside of your business.
  • Give them a sneak peek. Let them see what goes on behind the scenes. Share what a day in the life of YOU is like.

Often we focus so much on our own content and what we are sharing, that we forget the flip side to social media and that’s simply being social, engaging and having conversations. Building relationships keeps you top of mind with your audience. We all like to do business with people we know and trust. Get to know your audience.

How To Engage Your Audience On Instagram

Anyone who predicted in 2014 that Instagram was a platform to watch was right. Anyone who predicts in 2015 that Instagram a platform to not just watch but get on board is absolutely right. Instagram continues to grow in popularity. In a recent post from Agora Pulse on Instagram statistics, they stated: nearly 2 out of every 10 internet users, (and there are 3 billion), are on Instagram. And, Instagram’s user base just hit 300 million!

One of the things I love about social media marketing is that small businesses have a chance to stand out. Instagram is one such tool that you can use to do just that. It’s a great way for you to engage with your audience, keep them up to date on what it is you’re doing, and build strong relationships.

Here are a few basic ways you can engage your audience on Instagram:

Gratitude and Acknowledgement:

Show your customers or clients that you appreciate them. Showcase your customers after a purchase or visit. If you’re a B2B company, you could feature your client and their business. Everyone loves gratitude. Doing so further solidifies the relationships you’ve built.

Special Offers:

Build brand awareness and increase followings by offering incentives: Ask your followers to re-post your photos to get discounts on future purchases. Give away prizes to a certain number of people who participate in liking a selected photo. Ask customers to take a selfie with a purchase and tag your profile in the photo.

Tell Your Story:

Show your audience why they should do business with you. What do you offer? What makes you special or unique? What makes you stand out?

Take the time to really think about what you want to communicate to your audience. Be sure to stay consistent with your message. Emphasize your message through the photos you carefully select.

If you haven’t included Instagram as part of your business’ 2015 social media marketing resolution list, you may want to reconsider. With strong growth, high daily activity and engagement that outperforms Facebook and Twitter, Instagram is a great place for branding and sharing with your audience.
